The UFC’s flyweight division appears to be on the verge of extinction and Conor McGregor has placed the blame squarely on ONE FC for taking the division’s former long-time champion Demetrious Johnson.
At this time it’s not been officially confirmed that the 125lb division has been scrapped, but since Johnson parted ways for ONE FC in a trade deal with Ben Askren going the other way it’s been heavily rumored that this is the UFC’s intention.
UFC 125lb fighter Jose Torres added fuel to the fire yesterday when he claimed that he is the first flyweight to have been shown the exit door amid talk that not all competitors in the division will be offered the chance to fight for their place in the promotion at 135lbs instead.
“Im the 1st to be let go,” torres wrote on Twitter. “I didnt get to finish my UFC contract with 2 fights left because they are cutting most of my division n not giving some of us a chance to bump up n prove ourselves like myself. So now it’s time to move on to bigger and better things. Good luck small guys!”
With the cat apparently out of the bag, McGregor has now stepped into the spotlight and suggested that ONE FC have had a major role to play in the situation that’s currently unfolding over in the UFC.
“You must now take all the 125lbers that have been let go, Chatri,” McGregor wrote to ONE FC CEO Chatri Sityodtong.
“You talk all of this Martial Art and respect talk, yet your greed has directly cost more than half a fighting division it’s chance to earn income for their family.
