Conor McGregor used social media to get his message across yesterday as he thanked numerous media outlets for giving him accolades in 2015, put superstar boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr on blast, and addressed the controversy surrounding a picture of himself with an airsoft rifle.
The real meat of the message came with a response to Mayweather who had referenced McGregor earlier in the week while making a broader point that racial bias exists in the sporting world.
McGregor fired back in his Instagram post, claiming that his Irish heritage means he too is well aware what it’s like to be oppressed and warned the boxer to steer clear of trying to claim his success is somehow down to his race.
The 27 year-old even went as far as to offer to fight the recently retired champion who bowed out with a perfect, undefeated 49-0 record, though McGregor informed him that he now runs the fight game and as such would only be willing to give him 20% of the fight purse.
Meanwhile, McGregor is believed to be under investigation by Irish police after he posted a picture of himself on Instragram on Thursday in a car wearing a mask and holding an airsoft rifle.
A replica rifle like this isn’t classified as a weapon in Ireland, but possessing a realistic looking firearm like that in a public place without lawful authority or a reasonable excuse is a punishable offense.
However, according to McGregor it’s a non-story and the gun was only being used to help him prepare for a potential movie role.
Finally, McGregor also seemed to reference a strong rumor that he’ll be fighting lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of UFC 197 in March, stating, “What can I say, it’s just another easy night of work for me.”
