Reports out of Brazil suggest that UFC 224 is set to take place on May 12th in Rio De Janeiro and could well feature a female superfight.
According to the Combate site, the UFC is looking to headline the card with a clash of champions that would pit women’s featherweight titleholder Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino against bantamweight queen Amanda Nunes.
It was already known that this fight was in the works, but originally it had been believed that the promotion had been mulling over the possibility of stacking it onto the UFC 226 event in July alongside another superfight between Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier, and perhaps even a third featuring TJ Dillashaw and Demetrious Johnson.
As much of a spectacle as that would be, it does make more sense to spread the big fights over several major events though, rather than put all their eggs in one basket.
Certainly, this particular meeting of champions deserves to enjoy headline status as on paper it’s the biggest fight that can be made in WMMA right now, with ‘Cyborg’ being undefeated in her last 20 fights and coming off a win over a former 135lb champion in Holly Holm, while Nunes has slayed the likes of Ronda Rousey, Miesha Tate and Valentina Shevchenko during her current six-fight winning streak.
As an aside, it’s interesting to note that UFC 224 will go head-to-head with another edition of Bellator’s heavyweight grand-prix, which will feature their current light-heavyweight champion Ryan Bader going up against Muhammed ‘King Mo’ Lawal on the same night.
