Conor McGregor wants to put on a rematch with Dustin Poirier for charity in Dublin at the end of this year without the UFC’s involvement, but Dana White has now revealed that he’s countered that by making an offer to host it in the Octagon.
McGregor had initially proposed the charity fight to Poirier on social media earlier this week, claiming that he’d pay $500,000 towards his opponent’s ‘Good Fight Foundation’ charity, and ‘The Diamond’ accepted.
Since then McGregor has posted up a poster of the forthcoming exhibition bout, which notes that it would be a ‘Free to air spar’ on December 12th, the same night as UFC 256 is due to take place.
Whether McGregor and Poirier’s contract would even allow them to do this is unclear, but either way, White is now trying to smooth things over by floating the idea of the fight taking place under the UFC’s banner after all.
“(Conor) called out Poirier for a fight with (him) in Dublin for charity,” White told Barstool Sports. “So we offered them both a fight. We offered Dustin and Conor a fight, so we’re waiting to hear back from both of them.”
White also confirmed that McGregor had recently been forced to remove a claim he made on social media that he would be fighting Manny Pacquiao in a boxing match in Saudi Arabia next.
“The Saudis went after Connor and said it’s a lie that the [Pacquiao] fight is happening and ‘you better take it down in the next 15 minutes or we are going to sue you’.
“And he took it down. You don’t see the poster anymore about him and Pacquiao that he had posted.”
