Roberto Soldic successfully made his UFC debut last weekend with a convincing decision win over Khaos Williams, and has now taken a step towards rekindling an old rival with former champion Dricus du Plessis.
While he’s new to the Octagon, the 31-year-old Soldic has been a prominent player on the regional scene for many years, including being a former two-division KSW champion and also fighting for ONE FC.
It was during his four-year run in KSW that Soldic first encountered du Plessis, who wrenched the promotion’s welterweight title from his grasp with a 2nd round TKO victory in March of 2018.
By October of that year the two headed into a rematch, and this time it was Soldic who emerged victorious, handing DDP the first and only KO loss of his career to date.
As such, there’s now a growing possibility that all these years later a trilogy fight between the two could happen in the UFC to finally settle the score, and du Plessis seems up for it.
“Soldic, for a long time, has been in many people’s minds the best fighter outside of the UFC,” du Plessis told ‘Fight Forecast’. “Yeah, he’s at welterweight. It’s 1-1. Being the best outside of the UFC is not being the best in the UFC. We have seen that many times. It’s on a different level.
“You know, a super fight [could happen] down the line. If he gets a couple of wins and says, ‘Okay, let’s do a middleweight fight.’ I think that would be amazing. I think that fight would be awesome.”
