Frank Mir has recently been signed exclusively to Bellator, but he’s now eyeing free agency again and in addition to being keen to fight in some of the world’s leading organizations, he’s also eyeing a potential color commentary role in the UFC too.
“Basically I had a good conversation with Scott Coker,” Mir revealed on his Phone Booth Fighting podcast. “I’m still going to have a fight with them, just because there’s still a fight left on my fight contract. But because of my April contract coming up and Scott was very easy to talk to about it — their company’s shut down, he hasn’t even left his house in three weeks. So, once we start up, there’s going to be a backlog of fights because they have so many fighters on their roster.
“So now I’m basically — not basically — I am a free agent. Even though I would still do fights for Bellator, I’m not beholden to any contract to anybody now. So I can try out the free market and see whoever opens up fighting first.”
Mir went on to suggest the likes of Rizin and KSW as potential promotions he could fight for.
“It has always been a dream of mine to fight in Japan,” Mir said. “I remember watching the old PRIDE’s back in the day and RIZIN, it looks like they have a card coming up in August.”
“…“KSW looks like a phenomenal show. Man, their production value is crazy. They have some interesting fights over there in the heavyweight division,” Mir said, before suggesting Mariusz Pudzianowski as one potential opponent there.
However, Mir has also done color commentary work in the past for the likes of the WEC and he’s also throwing out the idea that perhaps he could work in that capacity for the UFC or other promotions.
“I’m actually opened up to where I can start talking to other companies and seeing where to go, which is great for commentary stuff.
“Because before being exclusive fight wise to Bellator curbed me as far as commentating for the UFC. Now maybe it will open up that avenue where I can start doing commentary for UFC fights again and other organizations.”
The commentary side of things seems like a smart move for Mir at this stage, though it might be tough to break into the UFC ranks again given that they already have an established line-up with the likes of Daniel Cormier, Michael Bisping, Dominick Cruz and Paul Felder.
The 40-year-old still feels like he can still compete too though, and though he was recently on a four-fight losing streak, he did turn that around in the Bellator cage back in October of last year when he won a decision over Roy Nelson.
