Gabriel Gonzaga continued his return back to form tonight with a second round guillotine choke victory over Ben Rothwell at UFC On FX 7 in Brazil.
Rothwell landed a couple of punches early and Gonzaga didn’t seem to like it, throwing a punch of his own back and then ducking in for a takedown.
He partially got Rothwell to the mat, but he was able to work back up with Gonzaga still on him up against the cage. Gonzaga gets him down again briefly a couple of times but both times they get back up before anything meaningful happens.
Prolonged clinch against the cage now instigated by Gonzaga and the referee steps in and breaks them up. However Gonzaga is undeterred and throws a punch which may have opened up a small cut below his opponent’s left eye before rushing in for the clinch again cage-side though it doesn’t last long.
Gonzaga finally lets his hands go a bit throwing three solid straight rights that land before failing on a takedown attempt. Rothwell connects with a couple of punches of his own before they clinch again to end the round.
Onto round two and the straight right is again working for Gonzaga, clipping Rothwell awkwardly once that made him stumble for a second, then soon after landing another couple which flowed into a takedown.
Rothwell half stuffed it, but left his neck out in the process and Gonzaga seized on it with a guillotine chokeĀ and stood up with it before dropping back to the mat.
Rothwell tries to resist the choke, but it’s too tight and he’s forced to tap with 1.01mins of the second round gone, handing Gonzaga his second victory in a row.
