Even though he’s retired, Georges St-Pierre still appears to have one foot still in the Octagon as he’s continuing to signal his interest in a potential superfight with current UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
“If the right fight came along, they know where to find me,” the 38-year-old St-Pierre told ESPN. “We tried to make the right fight but it didn’t work.”
Of course the ‘right fight’ at this stage would undoubtedly be current UFC lightweight champion Nurmagomedov, who GSP was allegedly pursuing a bout with before talks failed and he announced he was hanging up his gloves.
Khabib has made it clear he too is very much interested in that battle for the ages and so if the UFC can come to terms with the two parties it seems like it could well happen.
“It depends. If everything is aligned contractually, everything is good, as we speak now, yes I would,” St-Pierre said of fighting Nurmagomedov.
Dana White has also seemed to change his tune in recent times and is more enthusiastic about the fight than ever, but negotations between the UFC head honcho and GSP have been tense to say the least in the past, so it remains to be seen whether they will eventually meet eye-to-eye.
For now though the general thinking appears to be that Khabib will first defend his title against Tony Ferguson, so it’ll be 2020 at the very earliest before this superfight would have a chance to come to fruition.
