A heavyweight clash between Junior dos Santos and Alistair Overeem has been made official for the co-main event of December 19th’s UFC On FOX 17 event in Orlando, Florida.
The UFC have been trying to put this fight together for some time now, with two previous attempts to match them up having fallen through, so hopefully it holds together this time around.
Former heavyweight champion Dos Santos has been relatively inactive of late and so by the time fight night rolls around he’ll only have fought once in over two years – emerging victorious via unanimous decision in a gruelling five round battle with Stipe Miocic in December of last year on FOX.
Prior to that he had been handed a debilitating fifth round TKO loss in his trilogy fight with Cain Velasquez.
Not so long ago Overeem was teetering on the edge of being released from the UFC after suffering three stoppage losses due to strikes in four fights, but he’s managed to rediscover his form and has now compiled back-to-back victories over Stefan Struve and Roy Nelson.
Dos Santos is currently the No.2 contender in the division, while Overeem is placed at No.9 heading into this fight.
UFC On FOX 17 is shaping up to be an entertaining end-of-year event with a lightweight title fight between Rafael dos Anjos and Donald Cerrone set to headline the show, while Nate Diaz Vs Michael Johnson has also recently been announced for the main card.
