Justin Gaethje Reveals His Secret To Beating Ilia Topuria

Justin Gaethje decisively handed Ilia Topuria the first loss of his career to seize the lightweight title at the UFC: White House event back in June, and now he’s revealed how he did it.

UFC greats like Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway failed to crack the code to defeating Topuria in the past, but Gaethje identified a specific flaw in his game that he was able to exploit.

“I guess the best explanation for you to understand is his feet never change rhythm,” Gaethje explained on ex-UFC champ Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson’s YouTube channel. “He never changes rhythm with his feet. It’s forwards or backwards. So, ultimately, it’s about timing his feet and interrupting. The game plan was to interrupt his feet, especially when it’s so constant.”

Gaethje also pointed to Topuria’s over-confidence as being another major flaw that led to his downfall in the fight.

“Those are emotional mistakes in preparation,” Gaethje said of Topuria’s pre-fight belief that he couldn’t be beaten. “So, he wasn’t prepared for what happened that night. And that’s his fault, because he didn’t think that it was possible for someone to be there with him for that long, or whatever it was; he forgot who he was and how dangerous his game is. Every fight is so individual and nothing matters.”
