UFC Also Considering Jon Jones Vs Alexander Gustafsson For UFC 232

Earlier on Wednesday reports emerged that the UFC were thinking of booking a fight between Alexander Gustafsson and Yoel Romero at UFC 230 in November, but it seems that’s not the only option that’s under consideration.

ESPN is now reporting that the UFC are also considering booking a fight between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 232 a month later on December 28th in Las Vegas.

“It’s one of the greatest light heavyweight title fights in history and I expect the rematch to be the same!!!!” Dana White told ESPN in a text message.

Of course Jones and Gustafsson already have history, with the two having clashed while Jones was still champion back in 2013. At the time it proved to be the titleholder’s toughest ever test, though he eventually emerged with a unanimous decision victory.

There was then talk of an immediate rematch, but plans for that fell through and Gustafsson has been chasing a rematch with his rival ever since.

Jones has racked up a further three victories and a no-contest since then, though in latter years he’s been hitting the headlines for all the wrong reasons after failing drug tests, being involved in a hit-and-run incident and having several run-ins with police.

As for Gustafsson, his form has been somewhat patchy since the first encounter with Jones, going 3-2, though he is currently on a two-fight winning streak against Jan Blachowicz and Glover Teixeira.

“I’ve been hearing about the possibility that Alexander Gustafsson will be the first person I fight when I get back, which I’m excited about,” Jones told RT earlier this week. “A lot of people feel like he beat me the first time we fought, which didn’t happen. It was close, but he didn’t beat me.”

UFC 232 is currently scheduled to be headlined by a women’s superfight between featherweight champion Cris ‘Cyborg’ and bantamweight titleholder Amanda Nunes, but Jones Vs Gustafsson could well end up taking the main event spot if it does land on that night.
