Following last night’s UFC Fight Night 293 event the winners of the $100,000 bonus awards were announced.
‘Fight Of The Night’ honors went to a spirited but at times untidy scrap between Johnny Walker and Waldo Cortes-Acosta in the heavyweight main event. Walker offered up a more diverse selection of strikes during the fight, with a focus on kicks, while Cortes-Acosta had trouble tracking him down at times and often resorted to lunging in with punches. Even so, when he did land WCA’s strikes had an impact, and his constant forward pressure was wearing on Walker’s gas-tank. Then in the third round Walker landed a nice body kick and followed up with a question-mark kick that didn’t fully connect. However, when WCA tried to fire back, Walker caught him with a backhand that seemed to daze him, and as he backed up Walker charged forward and floored him with a punch to earn a TKO victory.
Elijah Smith earned one of two ‘Performance Of The Night’ awards for his swift finish against veteran fighter Davey Grant. Smith got the better of an early exchange when his left hook counter appeared to hurt Grant, then followed up soon after with a right hand and a left hook to knock him out just 60 seconds into the fight.
Also earning a performance bonus was Thomas Peterson, who had a tough first round against Gabriel Lorenco on the prelims, but then rallied in the second round by dropping his opponent and coming close to a finish with ground-and-pound. Peterson was able to continue that momentum into the third round by taking down his opponent, before eventually mustering up the energy for one last big burst of ground-and-pound to deliver a TKO stoppage with 13 seconds left on the clock.
