The sixth series Dana White’s Contender Series got underway last night and it turned out to be a less than impressive season premiere with just one fighter landing a contract when all was said and done.
Before the event had even began there was a hitch with a bantamweight fight being scrapped after Willian Souza managed to come in 10lbs overweight for his fight with Farid Basharat.
The main event provided the only finish of the evening, and the only new UFC fighter too, with Joe Pyfer securing a contract after he got the better of Ozzy Diaz in the main event, KO’ing him with a clean left hook in the second round.
Meanwhile, the other three fights on the card all went to the scorecards, with Anton Turkalj, Dennis Buzukja and Alessandro Costa picking up decision wins, but not doing enough to convince the UFC brass that they are worthy of being signed just yet.
“If you really want to be in the UFC, and you want your name out there, and you want people to know who you are, you want to walk in and be able to get sponsors, and all of the things that go along with professional fighting, perform on Tuesday night,” a disgruntled Dana White said at the post-fight presser after being left underwhelmed with the fighters performances on the night.
“Show us what you’ve got. Show us who you are. You’re either good enough to be in the UFC, or you’re not. If you are, show that to us.”
