The second week of Dana White’s Contender Series 5 took place last night and saw five more fighters being awarded UFC contracts.
They included main event winner Josh Quinlan, who essentially booked his spot in the promotion with his first punch of the night, which rocked his short-notice opponent Logan Urban enough that he was never really able to regain his bearings as Quinlan continued to blast him with more punches until he slumped to the canvas, sealing the TKO stoppage just 47 seconds into the fight.
Chidi Njokuani, brother of former UFC fighter Anthony, also secured a UFC spot in the UFC with a third round TKO stoppage of Mario Sousa.
In the opening round Njokuani had to endure no less than three illegal knee strikes from Sousa, which led to his opponent being deducted a point, but he would later get his revenge in the final round when a knee of his own to the body dropped Sousa, before elbow strikes on the mat delivered the TKO stoppage.
Saimon Oliveira was able to outpoint Jose Alday, but only via split decision courtesy of his flashier striking and wrestling, while Carlos Vergara claimed the fastest finish of the night when he stopped Bruno Korea with a knee to the midsection only 41 seconds into the opening round.
Finally, Chad Anheliger edged out Muin Gafurov on the scorecards by split-decision despite being outgrappled at times by his opponent on the mat, with his striking and ability to transition on top at times helping him emerge victorious.
