The UFC are reportedly trying to finally put together a fight between heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and WWE superstar Brock Lesnar for this summer.
That’s the word according to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani who claims that August is the month currently earmarked for the title fight.
A fight between the two had appeared certain when Lesnar entered the cage to challenge Cormier at UFC 226 after watching him defeat Stipe Miocic to claim the heavyweight strap.
Cormier has been enthusiastic about the idea of fighting the former champion since then, but Lesnar has been busy in the WWE instead and doesn’t appear to have been in any rush to actually make the bout happen.
In fact, it’s now been three years since the 41-year-old last set foot in the Octagon at UFC 200, earning a unanimous decision victory over Mark Hunt that was later amended to a no-contest ruling when he was found to have tested positive for a banned PED.
As for Cormier, he’s gone on to successfully defend his title against Derrick Lewis back in November with a second round submission victory.
There had been talk that DC was then going to retire on his 40th birthday, but that date has now come and gone last month and the signs are he’s still willing to extend his fighting career a little longer in order to take one or more blockbuster fights.
