Deiveson Figueiredo earned his biggest bantamweight win to date today at UFC On ABC 7 with a unanimous decision victory over Marlon Vera.
Round One:
Calf kick for Figueiredo to start. Now a solid calf kick from Vera. Vera lands an inside calf kick while throwing a punch.
Right hook lands on the counter for Figueiredo. In close Vera tries to unleash a flurry of punches but doesn’t find the mark.
Vera overcommits on a hook that Figueiredo evades and then uses that to bring him down. Figueiredo now in Vera’s full guard away from the cage with more than half the round remaining.
Vera trying to land a few elbows from his back. Figueiredo calm and patient on top. Vera trying for hammerfists. Body punch from Figueiredo and then as he stands over him Vera starts firing off upkicks. There’s then a scramble and Vera gets back to his feet.
Calf kick for Figueiredo. Vera tries for a knee but it doesn’t work out and Figueiredo counters by landing a well executed takedown near the end of the round. Couple of seconds left and Figueiredo stands and then drops down a stomping kick that looks to land high to the chest, though as they go back to their corners Vera is complaining to him that it was to the face.
Round Two:
Leg kick for Figueiredo. Now a body kick from him. He pumps out the jab. Vera steps into a punch but Figueiredo evades it.
Calf kick again for Figueiredo. Vera comes close with a head kick and Figueiredo tried to for a takedown after ducking that but couldn’t get into range.
Figueiredo tries for another takedown and Vera shrugs him off. Front kick to the body from Vera.
Solid calf kick for Vera. He punches to the body. Now Figueiredo steps in and rips to the body. Inside leg kick from Vera.
Figueiredo ducks into a single-leg, but Vera does well to defend that one. Right hook from Figueiredo is blocked. Vera lands another calf kick.
Jabs for Figueiredo and a low kick. Vera checks a kick. Figueiredo tries to load up on a punch but Vera backed off to make him miss.
Inside calf kick from Figueiredo while trying to land a punch. Figueiredo attempts another takedown that’s successfully defended.
Vera pressing forward late in the round with a punch of his own and then tries for a takedown. He doesn’t get it and ends the round looking for more striking opportunities.
Round Three:
Figueiredo trying for a takedown and Vera counters with a choke as he defends it. Figueiredo backs off, but then drives back in working for the takedown again. He presses Vera up against the cage but there’s nothing doing here and so he moves to striking range.
Calf kick for Figueiredo. Body punch for him. Calf kick from Vera. left hand for Vera as he tries to work a combination. Now a flurry in response from Figueiredo that’s blocked.
Missed head kick fromm Vera. Body kick from Figueiredo. Right hand lands for him too. Figueiredo with another combo that comes mostly off the guard.
Both land a body shot. Straight from Figueiredo drops Vera, but he gets back up and seems ok.
Figueiredo with a punch and a knee. Now a front kick to the chin at least partially lands. Vera with a hard body punch.
Two minutes remaining. Solid body punch from Figueiredo. Calf kick for Vera. Inside leg kick from Figueiredo.
Glancing left hook from Vera. Figueiredo tries to get in for a takedown, but Vera defends it. Again Figueiredo tries and again he’s thwarted.
Spinning head kick from Vera just misses. Figueiredo again goes for the takedown, but Vera’s takedown defense is working out well here.
Vera sprawls partially on another takedown attempt. Final 15 seconds and Figueiredo is motioning Vera to throw down. Neither man fully commits to it though until Vera tries for a flying knee, but slips and falls to the mat. He gets back up and there’s not enough time left to get anything going so we’re headed to the scorecards.
Decision:
Figueiredo looked a bit quicker, sharper and more elusive than Vera for significant spells in the fight and then made a statement when he managed to drop Vera in the final round, leading him to a unanimous decision victory (29-28 x2, 30-27).
