A welterweight fight between Stephen Thompson and Michel Pereira is rumored to be in the works for UFC 289 on June 10th at a destination still to be officially confirmed.
The 40-year-old Thompson last fought at the tail-end of last year, picking up a fourth round TKO finish over Kevin Holland.
However, prior to that ‘Wonderboy’ had suffered two losses in a row against Belal Muhammad and Gilbert Burns in 2021, leaving him ranked No.7 in the division heading into his next bout.
As for the 29-year-old Pereira, he is currently riding a five-fight winning streak in the division over the past few years.
That’s a run that began with a submission finish against Zelim Imadaev and has since been followed by four decision wins in a row against Khaos Williams, Niko Price, Andre Fialho and most recently Santiago Ponzinibbio.
Both fighters come from a karate background and are well known for their dynamic striking styles, so even although Pereira is only ranked No.15 in the welterweight division it’s easy to see why the UFC are eager to put these two head-to-head in the Octagon.
While not official yet, if it’s confirmed Thompson vs Pereira would join a UFC 289 card that’s still waiting for a main and co-main event, but will feature the likes of Dan Ige vs. Nate Landwehr and Eryk Anders vs. Marc-Andre Barriault.
