Tom Aspinall Claims ‘Big News Coming’ After Jon Jones Win At UFC 309

It seems that UFC interim heavyweight titleholder Tom Aspinall’s hopes of fighting current champion Jon Jones could yet still happen, with the star hinting that big news could be in the works.

“Just had a meeting with Dana, the other UFC brass, Hunter, and all success,” Aspinall said as he left the arena on Saturday night after watching Jones successfully defend his title against Stipe Miocic. “We’ll see you next time.  Big news coming!  Big news coming.”

Late last week Dana White had thrown his weight behind the match-up, insisting it was the fight that had to happen next.

And after Jones finished Miocic with a spinning back kick to the body on Saturday night, White claimed that a fight with Aspinall would be as big a fight as has ever been seen in the Octagon.

“It will be the biggest heavyweight fight in UFC heavyweight history, by a long shot,” White told reporters. “And it will probably end up being the biggest fight we’ve ever done.”

Jones has been doggedly persistent in his view that a fight with Aspinall is beneath him, but perhaps he’s changed his opinion after seeing how much demand there’s been for the fight among fans during the build-up to UFC 309 last week, because post-fight he hinted that perhaps it could happen after all.

“As far as my future in the octagon, I decided that maybe I will not retire and I have some conversations to have with Dana and Hunter [Campbell].  We have some negotiating to do, and if everything goes right maybe we’ll give you guys what you want to see,” Jones said in his Octagon interview with Joe Rogan.
