UFC strawweight champion Zhang Weili and flyweight titleholder Alexa Grasso appear to be trying to help out the matchmakers put together the card for the eagerly anticipated UFC 300 event on April 13th in Las Vegas as they’ve just verbally agreed to a superfight title showdown.
“Hi champion,” Weili wrote to Grasso on Instagram. “Maybe the fans want to see us fight at UFC 300.”
“@zhangweilimma I admire you so much!” Grasso responded. “And I’d love to defend my title with you. Would you make 125?”
“Let’s Gooooo champion,” Weili replied. “I can go up to 125. @danawhite @ufc Let‘s make it happen.”
The 34-year-old Weili is currently on a three-fight winning streak that’s included reclaiming the 115lb title with a submission win over Carla Esparza last year, followed by a successful title defense against Amanda Lemos on the scorecards back in August.
As for the 30-year-old Grasso, she has gone six-fights undefeated since moving up to flyweight, including a title-winning submission victory over long-time divisional queen Valentina Shevchenko back in March to seize the 125lb title, though the subsequent rematch between them in September ended in a split draw verdict.
It remains to be seen whether the UFC will take them up on the offer to have a flyweight title superfight between Weili and Grasso at UFC 300, with the only star so far confirmed to definitely be on the card being veteran campaigner Jim Miller, who will then have the unique distinction of being the only fighter in the history of the promotion to fight at UFC 100, UFC 200 and UFC 300.
