Ian Garry is brimming with confidence ahead of his welterweight fight with Vicente Luque at UFC 296 in December and is convinced that he’ll beat him any way he chooses to on the night.
“Dec. 16, stay tuned, be ready, because I’m going to go out there and I’m going to finish Vicente Luque whatever way I want,” the No.10 ranked Garry said on The Energized Show.
After winning all six of his UFC fights to date the undefeated Garry is being hailed as the next big star out of Ireland, and apparently there’s no-one who thinks he’s more deserving of that accolade than the 26-year-old himself.
“They should be, they f*cking should be,” Garry said when the level of Irish fans excitement for his next fight is mentioned. “I’m unbelievable. I’ve been telling you this since I was a teenager, I am unbelievable. The way my brain works, and the way I look at fights, and the way I calculate stuff is just different to people on the planet. I have a different wavelength, a different understanding of the way fighting works. And I can go in there and manipulate and manhandle people in any way, shape, or form that I want to because I’m that much better than them.
“This fight with Luque, the fight with Magny, the fight with D-Rod, it’s all the same stuff, just repeated in different ways. I will find a way to have success, and I will win every single time because I am that much better than everyone. So, everyone should be excited.”
Some of Garry’s statements have more than a hint of fellow Irishman Conor McGregor about them, and sure enough, by his own admission he’s a big fan of the superstar and only has good things to say about a recent opportunity to train with him.
“There was a point in which, when we were doing the MMA sparring, you seen it in the video he posted, where he brought out the OG Conor. Like the split stance squat, the hand came out and the spin started coming. I was like get the f*ck out of here, I know what’s coming next. I watched you too many times to not know what you were going to do next. I knew there was a spin coming so I was like get the f*ck out of here but lads like honestly, as a fan, it was super exciting because I got to see the best to ever do it and I got to feel his striking.”
