There’s been a lot of talk about Rashad Evans moving down to the UFC’s middleweight division, much of it coming from the fighter himself, but in a new interview he reveals that he has some unfinished business at light-heavyweight first.
“I just wanna fight the best competitors. It’s really hard to go down a weight class after you’ve lost a fight, because it doesn’t leave a good taste in your mouth. I may have to get one back at 205 before I go down to any weight class,” Evans told MMALive after UFC 150 on Saturday night.
One potential fight that fans would like to see, whether at middleweight or light-heavy, is with Chael Sonnen, and despite the fact the two have become friends outside of the Octagon he seems to be leaving the door ever so slightly ajar for a potential bout between them.
“Chael will always be an interesting fight, but we work together a lot for Fuel TV, so I don’t know if it will happen,” Evans says at first, but then adds, “I mean, I never wanna back away from a fight so if Chael wants to come up we’ve gotta do it.”
Sonnen is himself currently considering a move up to light-heavyweight so it’s not out of the realms of possibility that this is a match-up we could be seeing down the line.
However, if Evans could pick any opponent to fight right now he says it would be middleweight champion Anderson Silva, though he acknowledges that he’d probably have to establish himself in that division first before earning the title shot.
