Anthony Pettis appears to be going through a particularly unlucky spell in his career at the moment. After initially being told he would be coaching TUF 17 opposite Donald Cerrone they then decided to go in another direction, while around the same time Pettis suffered a shoulder injury, and now has been diagnosed with a staph infection too.
“Wow! One thing after another,” a frustrated Pettis told his fans on Twitter on Monday after being admitted to hospital with the infection to his elbow.
Despite having missed out on the TUF gig, Pettis had still been expecting to fight Cerrone in January, but due to his recent health issues it’s now uncertain whether the bout will be going ahead as planned.
The news of Pettis’ latest setback didn’t sit well with Cerrone who’s since admitted that he’s now considering other potential options for his next visit to the Octagon despite the fact he was under the assumption that the fight would have established the next title contender in the UFC’s lightweight division.
“That’s the No. 1 contendership, so of course that means something,” Cerrone told MMAjunkie. “That’s the ultimate goal to get that title, chase that dream. So it makes sense. Does waiting on him make sense? I don’t know. We were supposed to go for Denver. No. OK, we’ll be ready in December. January. Now February? March? I understand the guy is hurt, but I’ve got bills to pay, too.”
However, Duke Roufus who manages Pettis has since posted on the popular ‘Underground Forum’ to alleviate fans fears and insist that Pettis will still be fit to fight Cerrone if that’s what the UFC wants.
“Just wanted to update everybody on Anthony. He missed the interview on Inside MMA with his brother Sergio. He was in the hospital getting the cellulitus in his arm treated. He is not out of a potential fight with Cowboy or anyone else the UFC has in mind for him to fight.
If the fight happens it will great for the fans! Crossing Fingers!”
