In his pre-fight interview for UFC 158 Nick Diaz suggests that his opponent Georges St.Pierre won’t ever be considered the sport’s pound-for-pound best as he’s not willing to put it all in the line against the top fighters.
“I will tell you right now I want to fight the #1 fighter in the world,” Diaz says. “I’ve always said that. Georges has never said that. If I was in his place I would be asking for the Anderson Silva fight. I wouldn’t let that blow away. That’s crazy.”
It’s a nice line from Diaz, though he’s changed his tune a little since in the past his stance was always that St.Pierre wasn’t fighting the best competition because he was ducking him.
The irony here is that on this occasion GSP overlooked a fight with the division’s rightful No.1 contender Johny Hendricks so that he could call out Diaz instead, even though the former Strikeforce welterweight champion is coming off a loss to Carlos Condit.
Still, he does make a good case here for why St.Pierre should be looking to fight Silva.
