Rashad Evans is fresh off an impressive first round victory over Chael Sonnen, and it looks like he’s already got another fight in the works, and it could come against another of his broadcasting colleagues on FOX Sports.
On the latest edition of the ‘UFC Tonight’ show, Evans says he’d heard that Daniel Cormier could end up being his next opponent, and also teased on Twitter that he, “may have a fight to announce real soon.”
If so, he’ll be the first fighter to welcome Cormier to the UFC’s light-heavyweight division after the former Strikeforce heavyweight grand-prix winner’s brief stint in the UFC’s heavyweight division which saw him compile decision victories over Frank Mir and Roy Nelson.
Cormier had initially been hoping for an immediate title shot against Jon Jones, but the champion currently has his hands full with an impending fight with Glover Teixeira that’s currently targetted for either March or April, and then potentially a rematch with Alexander Gustafsson.
Evans, who’s also picked up a split decision victory over Dan Henderson in the past six months, certainly presents a tough challenge for Cormier.
Stylistically it’s a good match-up with both men coming from a strong wrestling base, while also being dangerous on the feet. With that in mind much of the pre-fight focus might be on how Cormier copes with the drop down to 205lbs, having suffered kidney failure at the Olympics in 2004 after a tough weight cut.
As you might expect, Cormier has been very careful with his weight loss this time around, and has been steadily sheading the pounds, even weighing in for his last fight at heavyweight at just 224lbs.
