Josh Thomson and Michael Johnson will square off on the main card at UFC On FOX 12 in San Jose on July 26th.
Thomson has plenty of experience on FOX already, with both of his UFC fights since joining from Strikeforce so far having also featured on the channel, initially picking up a big TKO win over Nate Diaz before losing a razor thin split decision to former champion Ben Henderson back in January.
With that in mind he’d have been hoping for another fight with a leading contender in order to try to get himself straight back into the title mix, but instead he’ll have to settle for facing a rising star in the division in Johnson.
Thanks to the removal of Diaz and TJ Grant from the official UFC rankings due to inactivity, former TUF fighter Johnson now finds himself sitting at No.10 in the division, and with a chance to jump even higher if he gets a win over the man currently placed at No.3.
Johnson deserves his current ranking though having displayed marked improvement in his striking skills in particular during his time in the UFC, and that’s lead to him enjoying a three-fight winning streak at this moment in time, defeating respected opponents like Joe Lauzon, Gleison Tibau and Melvin Guillard along the way.
Thomson Vs Johnson is the second fight announced for the San Jose event, with a light-heavyweight encounter between Anthony Johnson and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira also set to feature on the main card.
As things stand a main event for the fight card has yet to be announced.
