A middleweight fight with potential title implications between Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza and Yoel Romero has been scratched from the UFC 184 main card on February 28th in Los Angeles.
‘Jacare’ is reported to be suffering from pneumonia, leaving the UFC with no option but to cancel the fight. However, the word from inside the company is that, rather than look for a new opponent for Romero, they’ll just postpone the existing match-up until Souza recovers.
‘Jacare’ is currently the No.2 ranked contender at 185lbs thanks to four wins in a row in the Octagon to date since joining from Strikeforce where he’d also been on a three-fight winning streak.
Romero has also been impressing during his time in the UFC after also transferring over from the now defunct Strikeforce promotion with five wins under his belt so far in the promotion, including a controversial third round TKO victory over Tim Kennedy last time out which saw him rise to No.6 on the rankings.
Losing ‘Jacare’ Vs Romero from the main card is definitely a blow for UFC 184, but luckily it’s a strong enough card to be able to bounce back from it with two title fights already fronting the show as middleweight champ Chris Weidman takes on Vitor Belfort and woman’s bantamweight star Ronda Rousey clashes with Cat Zingano.
A recently announced lightweight encounter between Tony Ferguson and Yancy Medeiros appears to now be taking the vacant slot on the PPV portion of the card alongside Josh Koscheck Vs Jake Ellenberger and Holly Hom’s debut against Raquel Pennington.
