Gegard Mousasi stopped Dan Henderson in the first round by TKO tonight at UFC On FOX 14, though there was some controversy regarding whether the fight was stopped prematurely or not.
Round One:
Mousasi with the jab working to start. Head kick from Mousasi that’s blocked. He moves away from a bombing punch from Hendo.
Henderson has some kind of damage to his left eye and Mousasi is pointing to it, but the referee tells him to fight on.
Mousasi pushing the pace here. Suddenly Mousasi clips Henderson with a right hand to the top of the head and he’s wobbled by it. He falls back to the canvas as Mousasi follows up with strikes and the ref jumps in and stops the fight!
Henderson was actually taking down Mousasi as the fight ended there and he’s immediately up complaining to the referee about the early stoppage. It was perhaps premature, but there’s no doubt Mousasi had him rocked there and there was a brief moment when he looked like he might be out.
Hendo has now lost five of his last six fights which may bring calls for him to retire. The premature stoppage clouds the issue so he’ll no doubt be looking to fight on, but he’s definitely not taking a punch like he used to anymore.
