A middleweight fight between Gegard Mousasi and Derek Brunson is believed to have been targeted for the UFC 200 event in Las Vegas on July 9th according to FOX Sports.
Mousasi is coming off a unanimous decision win over Thales Leites at UFC Fight Night 84 in the UK late last month.
Prior to that the 30 year-old had suffered a TKO loss to Uriah Hall in Japan, but he does have wins in three of his last four UFC fights and is currently ranked No.9 in the division.
Just two places behind him in the rankings at No.11, Brunson is currently enjoying a four-fight winning streak in the division, with the last three against Ed Herman, Sam Alvey and Roan Carneiro all ending by way of first round TKO.
Now the 32 year-old takes a big step up in competition as he looks to prove that he’s worthy of a spot in the divison’s top 10 rankings.
Mousasi Vs Brunson is the second fight to be linked to the blockbuster UFC 200 show, with a heavyweight fight between Cain Velasquez and Travis Browne also believed to be in the works.
It’s not clear where those two fights will feature on the card, with spots on the main pay-per-view portion of the line-up not guaranteed given that the promotion are sure to be stacking this show with major match-ups to celebrate their 200th numbered event.
At this stage there’s no word on who will headline the show, though Conor McGregor defending his featherweight title in a rematch with Jose Aldo or first encounter with Frankie Edgar seems like a possibility at this stage.
