In the aftermath of Conor McGregor’s announcement yesterday that he was retiring with immediate effect, and Dana White claiming that they pulled the superstar from their forthcoming UFC 200 event due to his refusal to attend forthcoming promotional obligations, plans are said to be underway for new match-ups for the historic Las Vegas event on July 9th.
According to White, McGregor’s opponent at UFC 200, Nate Diaz, will now be flying into Las Vegas later today to discuss potential new opponents for the blockbuster show.
As things stand UFC 200 would be headlined by a woman’s bantamweight title fight between Miesha Tate and Amanda Nunes, with a rematch between Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar serving as the co-main event.
In the wake of McGregor’s supposed retirement it would be interesting to see whether the promotion would then look to upgrade that fight from an interim featherweight title encounter to a fully fledged battle for the vacant belt, and if so, would that then supercede Tate Vs Nunes at the top of the card?
It seems that the promotion have other plans up their sleeve though, as the UFC president has indicated that they are also working on other potential match-ups for UFC 200 as they look to further bolster what was supposed to be a flagship event for the promotion.
