A light-heavyweight encounter between top 3 contenders Anthony Johnson and Glover Teixeira is expected to take place at UFC On FOX 20 in Chicago on July 23rd.
According to ‘UFC Tonight’, the pivotal fight for the division will serve as the evening’s co-main event, with Holly Holm Vs Valentina Shevechenko taking main event honors.
‘Rumble’ Johnson is coming off back-to-back knockout victories against Jimi Manuwa and Ryan Bader heading into this fight. Prior to that he had lost out in a fight for the vacant 205lb title last year, suffering a third round submission loss to Daniel Cormier.
Johnson may well be one of the hardest hitters ever in the sport, but Teixeira is no slouch in that department either, and the Brazilian has compiled a trio of victories himself in the past year, having submitted recent title challenger Ovince St. Preux, TKO’d Patrick Cummins and most recently knocked out Rashad Evans.
Like ‘Rumble’, Teixeira has fought for the light-heavyweight title once before, coming up short by unanimous decision against Jon Jones two years ago at UFC 172.
Johnson Vs Teixeira is an excellent match-up, and could well prove to be a No.1 contender bout, with the victor going on to face the winner of UFC 200’s main event title clash between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones.
