Michael Chiesa has been forced to pull out of his UFC fight Night 91 headlining fight with Tony Ferguson on July 13th in South Dakota due to an injury.
Chiesa has been diagnosed with a ruptured disc after hurting himself while flipping a tire in training, and so was left with no option other than to bow out of his highest profile fight to date and first opportunity to headline a UFC card.
“This fight has champion implications and it has very personal value to me with it being my first main event, and just being against a world class guy like Tony Ferguson, whom I have a lot of respect for,” a dejected Chiesa told bloodyelbow.com. “I was really looking forward to testing myself against him, to see what I’m really made of. It’s tough to find any upside or positive aspect here, and I’ve been looking pretty hard for one. Where is the light in the tunnel? I’m certainly not seeing it right now.”
With Chiesa out, the UFC are now actively seeking a new opponent for Ferguson, who was heading into this fight on an impressive seven fight winning streak that’s left him ranked No.3 in the 155lb weight class.
