There were chaotic scenes inside the Octagon following Fabricio Werdum’s fight with Travis Browne at UFC 203 last night as the former champion lashed out at his opponent’s coach, Edmond Tarverdyan.
Werdum was being heckled by the crowd as the two fighters awaited what would turn out to be a unanimous decision victory for the Brazilian, and he responded by making a ‘boo hoo’ gesture at the fans.
Moments later, Tarverdyan, who’s best known as being the coach of both Browne and Ronda Rousey, began shouting and swearing at Werdum.
“He said, ‘Motherf*cker, shut your mouth, motherf*cker.'” Werdum recalled at the post-fight press conference.
Werdum then approached Tarverdyan, who continued to mouth off at him, at which point the Brazilian threw a teep kick, which did connect, but only pushed the 34 year-old coach and didn’t appear to hurt him.
“I know he’s a boxing coach, and I saw in his eyes he wanted to punch my face,” Werdum said. “And I just kept the distance. So that’s it. But he came (forward) first; he said a lot of bad things. My mom said never say bad things to nobody. But he started.”
The altercation was over almost as quickly as it started, with both fighters cornermen being ordered to leave the Octagon before the final decision was announced.
It’s not clear at this stage whether Werdum or Tarverdyan will be punished over the incident.
