Former woman’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate will take on Raquel Pennington at UFC 205 as the promotion continues to add stars to the line-up for their first ever show at Madison Square Garden in New York City on November 12th.
Tate seized the 135lb title with a last-gasp submission win over Holly Holm at UFC 196 in March, but just a few months later Amanda nunes snatched the belt from her with a surprisingly swift first round submission win in the main event of UFC 200 in July.
That brought an end to a five fight winning streak for ‘Cupcake’, but the 30 year-old remains the No.1 contender in the weight class.
With that in mind it’s perhaps a little surprising to see her matched up with Pennington, who’s further down the rankings at No.8 following a recent three-fight winning streak.
So far, ‘Rocky’ has defeated Jessica Andrade, Bethe Correia and Elizabeth Phillips, but Tate will undoubtedly be her biggest test to date.
Tate Vs Pennington is the second high profile female fight to be added to UFC 205, with a strawweight title fight between Joanna Jedrzejczyk Vs Karolina Kowalkiewicz also having been announced yesterday.
They join a card that also features a welterweight title fight between Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson, Chris Weidman Vs Yoel Romero, Rashad Evans Vs Tim Kennedy, Donald Cerrone Vs Kelvin Gastelum and Frankie Edgar Vs Jeremy Stephens on what will undoubtedly be one of the biggest events of the year.
