The UFC have now officially confirmed that lightweight champion Conor McGregor has vacated his featherweight title, and that has significant ramifications for the division, and the forthcoming UFC 206 event.
Firstly, interim title holder Jose Aldo has now become the featherweight champion once again with immediate effect.
Secondly, the UFC 206 co-main event featherweight clash between the division’s new No.1 contender Max Holloway and former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis has now been upgraded to headlining status, with the 145lb interim title now also being on the line.
The winner of that fight will then go on to fight Aldo for the title in 2017.
The news comes just days after UFC 206’s previous headliner, a light-heavyweight title rematch between current champion Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson fell through after DC suffered an injury.
The UFC had originally planned to keep ‘Rumble’ on the card, but he reportedly turned down short notice fights with both Gegard Mousasi and Tim Kennedy in favor of biding his time until the champion is healed up.
With Holloway vs Pettis now promoted to main event status, a welterweight fight between Donald Cerrone and Matt Brown also gets a boost up to co-main event status for the December 10th show in Toronto, Canada.
