Colby Covington hasn’t fought since winning the UFC interim welterweight title back in June of last year, and now the outspoken fighter has not only been stripped of the belt, but will also have to get back in line to have a shot at fighting the current champion.
“Colby now is going to have to fight again and earn the spot to get back,” White said during a Facebook Live chat with the Las Vegas Review-Journal this week.
Covington had previously been stripped of the interim title when he turned down a fight with Tyron woodley at UFC 228, and then subsequent attempts to put the fight together also fell through.
That put Covington firmly in the bad books with the UFC brass, but he also hasn’t done himself any favors by repeatedly badmouthing the company, and Dana White in particular, calling him “Uncle Fester” and daring the UFC president to fire him.
Needless to say that was never going to go down well, and though at one stage it appeared that he was going to fight the winner of UFC 235’s Tyron Woodley Vs Kamaru Usman fight, now it seems that he’s even further down the pecking order, despite being in a six-fight winning streak in the 170lb division.
