Injury Forces Tyron Woodley Out Of Robbie Lawler Rematch

Tyron Woodley won’t be rematching Robbie Lawler at UFC On ESPN 3 in Minneapolis on June 29th after all as word emerges that the former welterweight champion has suffered an injury in training.

Woodley is believed to have an injured hand, though the full extent of the damage isn’t yet known.

It’s enough to keep him from the fight though, and so with six weeks to go the UFC will now be on the hunt for a suitable replacement to keep Lawler on the card.

Woodley had been looking to return for the first time since he lost his belt by unanimous decision to Kamaru Usman after a dissapointing performance in which he was dominated from start to finish.

The fight with Lawler would have seen him go back to the opponent who he first seized the title from by way of a first round knockout back in 2016.

Since that loss, ‘Ruthless’ has only fought three times, earning a unanimous decision victory over Donald Cerrone, before suffering back-to-back defeats against Rafael dos Anjos and Ben Askren.

Woodley vs. Lawler had been tagged as the main event for UFC On ESPN 3, so the UFC will now be looking for another big name opponent to put opposite Lawler instead to preserve the bout’s main event status.
