UFC middleweight star Yoel Romero has won a staggering $27 million in damages after successfully winning a lawsuit against a company who sold a tainted supplement that he used.
Romero was suspended by USADA back in 2016 after being flagged for a banned substance in an out-of-competition test not long after a fight with Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza.
However, Romero and his team were able to prove that the substance came from a tainted supplement he had been using made by Gold Star Performance Products and that led to his suspension being reduced from potentially two years down to just six months.
Nevertheless, Romero wanted to further clear his name and so he pursued a lawsuit against Gold Star and that has now paid off in a huge way with yesterday’s win, which included $3 million in lost wages, $3 million for reputable harm and $3 million for emotional damage.
That sum was then tripled due to $27 million due to an act in New Jersey that triples damages when a company is found to have committed consumer fraud.
It’s an astronomical sum, but the chances of Romero actually ever getting his hands on anything close to that remains very much in doubt as it’s more likely that the company simply can’t afford that amount and will go bankrupt.
Whatever happens it has helped further clear Romero’s name and he can now look forward to his next fight with Paulo Costa at UFC 241 in August with the matter now finally behind it.
