With Conor McGregor now officially signed up to fight Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 in Las Vegas on January 18th, people are beginning to take notice of the fact that the event doesn’t yet have a meaningful co-main event to go alongside it.
However, Darren Till is eager to change all that as he’s called out former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker to fight him at that show.
“Surely they need a co-main event? @robwhittakermma let’s go! #LowTopTing,” Till wrote on Twitter.
Whittaker had previously indicated a willingess to fight Till in March, but it remains to be seen if he’ll be ok with the idea of taking him on in seven weeks time, and indeed whether the UFC will be on-board with the idea.
Till made an immediate impression in his middleweight debut recently by defeating Kelvin Gastelum by split decision at UFC 244 at the start of November.
It wasn’t a thrilling fight by any means, but it helped Till rebound from back-to-back losses against Tyron Woodley and Jorge Masvidal at welterweight, and has left him placed at No.5 in the 185lb rankings already.
As for Whittaker, the injury plagued star lost his title to Israel Adesanya via a second round KO in October, which was his first loss in five years, bringing an end to a nine-fight winning streak in the UFC that had seen him defeat the likes of Yoel Romero (twice), Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza, Derek Brunson and Uriah Hall.
As things stand UFC 246: McGregor vs. Cerrone could use a notable co-main event, with other fights announced so far including Anthony Pettis vs. Carlos Diego Ferreira and Maycee Barber vs. Roxanne Modafferi.
