A bantamweight fight between Aljamain Sterling and Cory Sandhagen has tentatively been scheduled for UFC Fight Night 175 in San Diego, California on May 16th.
We say tenatively because at this stage the event is still scheduled to proceed, but continuing uncertainty over the coronavirus situation means that it may well yet fall through, but the fact that the UFC is still booking fights for it show that they haven’t given up on it taking place just yet.
Sterling has been in excellent form in the division in recent times, racking up four wins in a row over the past two years.
That run started with a decision win over Brett Johns, followed by a rare suleov stretch submission finish against Cody Stamann, then a further two victories on the scorecards against Jimmie Rivera and Pedro Munhoz, leaving him ranked No.2 in the division.
Meanwhile, Sandhagen has also been making big moves since he joined the UFC at the start of 2018, putting together a five-fight winning streak.
He initially made his presence felt with back-to-back TKO victories against Austin Arnett and Iuri Alcantara, then followed that up with a submission victory over Mario Bautista and then took a step up in competition with decision wins over John Lineker and Raphael Assuncao to land at No.4 in the rankings.
If it goes ahead, Sterling vs. Sandhagen would just a UFC Fight Night 175 card that had at one stage been rumored to feature a headliner between Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker, though as things stand it appears that fight may now have fallen through.
