A fight between strawweight champion Zhang Weili and Rose Namajunas is in the works to headline the upcoming UFC 261 event on April 24th at a destination still to be confirmed.
It’s been almost a year since Weili’s last fight, an instant classic five-round war with Joanna Jedrzejczyk, which she narrowly won by split decision and would go on to be cited as some critics ‘Fight Of The Year’ for 2020.
In total Weili has now won all five of her fights since joining the UFC in 2018, defeating the likes of Jessica Andrade, Tecia Torres and Jessica Aguilar along the way, while expanding her overall career record to 21-1.
Now she’ll go up against a former 115lb champion in Namajunas, who lost the belt to Jessica Andrade by way of a slam knockout in 2019, but has since avenged that defeat with a split decision victory over the Brazilian in the summer of last year.
In total Namajunas has now compiled a 7-3 record in the UFC, during which time she’s earned back-to-back victories over Joanna Jedrzejczyk as well as others like Michelle Waterson, Tecia Torres, Paige VanZant and Angela Hill.
Weili vs. Namajunas appears to be getting headline honors for UFC 261 ahead of the other big women’s title bout on the card, which sees flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko going up against Jessica Andrade.
