A five fight winning streak had Derek Brunson edging close to middleweight title contention heading into his fight with Jared Cannonier on Saturday night at UFC 271, but a second round KO loss appears to have put an end to his title aspirations.
Not only that, but now the 38-year-old Brunson appears to have hinted in a social media post that he may hang up his gloves after one last fight in the Octagon.
“Made a title push,” Brunson wrote on Twitter. “Number 3 vs 4 in the world. I came up short. Life lessons. I’m all good, sad but life will give you theses moments.
“I’ll pick myself up for one more fight. Blessings all 🙏🏾”
Brunson’s winning streak had seen him defeat the likes of Darren Till, Kevin Holland, Edmen Shaybazyan, Ian Heinisch and Elias Theodorou, while earlier in his UFC run he had beaten others like Lyoto Machida, Uriah Hall, Sam Alvey and Chris Leben, leaving him with an overall 14-6 record in the Octagon to date.
Another win could put him right back in the mix though, so it remains to be seen whether Brunson really will go through with the idea of retiring once the time comes, or if after letting the dust settle he’ll still fancy making one last push for the title glory that has eluded him up to this point.
