Five Ways UFC 178 Could Rearrange MMA

Conor McGregor, the Great Irish Hope, goes from welfare to well ...

Conor McGregor Could Emerge As The UFC’s Biggest Star:

In a time starved for true top-level stars in the UFC, McGregor is quickly talking himself into a position as one of their biggest, and he’s done so without a single win over anyone remotely close to a spot on the featherweight Top 10.

“Notorious” will face his first true challenge in the form of No. 5 Dustin Poirier at UFC 178, and if he wins how he’s been saying he’s going to, there won’t be much doubt that he’ll have arrived as a legitimate title contender in one of the most talented divisions in MMA.

McGregor has taken creative trash talk to a new level, offending many of the top featherweights in the world during his meteoric rise to fame. He brings the support of the entire Irish Nation on his shoulders as well, which is huge considering they are some of the most passionate fight fans in the world.

The only negative aspect of the hype train that he’s built for himself is that he absolutely has to win to avoid looking like a fool. He’s claimed he’ll finish Poirier in the first round so many times that anything else will be a letdown.

Meanwhile, the cool and calculating Poirier has seemingly gone about his business with an air of belief that he is simply the better fighter.

We’re going to find out on Saturday night. If it’s McGregor that emerges victorious, the UFC will have a new heir apparent to absent PPV kings Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva.
