The Aftermath Articles: 4 things to take away from UFC 182

Jon Jones beats Daniel Cormier via unanimous decision at UFC 182 ...

A rematch with Gustafsson is the last intriguing match for Jones for a long time

Yes, Anthony Johnson could beat beat Gustafsson and face Jones, but he has nothing Jones hasn’t dealt with before.  Big punching power, strong wrestling, and athletic, Jon has been there and beat that.  Not taking anything from that performance from DC, he made Jones look human.  He had some success with the pressure and the dirty boxing.  He was neutralizing the reach by making the fight take place in the clench.  Jones however took Daniel down like he said he would, and in the championship rounds, the champion had more left in him.  If DC was going to pressure Jones he needed to keep the pressure going into those championship rounds.  Cain Valasquez does not fade in the 4th or “take it off” like Cormier admitted to.  A rematch might occur but the result will likely be the same.  Jones has a natural gift of an 84 inch reach and it would be unwise if he didn’t use it the way he does.  Gustafsson is just able to stifle Jones’s reach and leverage so well that a rematch is interesting.  Just like DC he faded when it matter most, when the elitist of the elite shine.  Anderson Silva’s triangle in the 5th, Cain’s continued brutalization in the 5th, Frankie Edgar’s comebacks in the 4th and 5th,  these are the rounds and the moments that define champions, that define the elite, the will to be broken by no man except father time.
