Despite it being the most cursed UFC match-up of all-time, Dana White has revealed that he’s still keen to see lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson fight.
Five times in five years the promotion have tried to put the fight together, and it’s continually fallen through due to a laundry list of reasons, but if both Ferguson and Khabib win their next fights then White has vowed he’ll try to make it again.
“If Khabib does beat Gaethe, you get Tony Ferguson another fight, which we’re working on right now,” White told Sports Illustrated. “And hopefully that fight with Khabib happens because I know people want to see it.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a fight fall apart as many times as those two. It almost scares me to make the fight again. What’s going to happen? An asteroid comes to earth? That’s the level of bad this thing is.”
Perhaps White shouldn’t have tempted fate by mentioning this so soon. After all there’s plenty of potential banana skins in the path of this fight being made successfully right now, not least the fact that Khabib has to get past Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 first.
We also have to see who they decide to pair Ferguson up with as he looks to rebound from a TKO loss to the aforementioned Gaethje back in May, which brought his 12-fight winning streak to an end.
Still, if Ferguson does get back to winning ways then everyone would certainly want to see that fight, though you have to wonder whether Nurmagomedov will be as enthusiastic about it now, or if he may prefer to try and tempt Georges St-Pierre to return for a blockbuster showdown intead.
