At 41-years-old Glover Teixeira has managed to compile a five-fight winning streak that culminated with a submission victory over Thiago Santos on Saturday night and now he’s loudly calling for a title shot.
The only problem is that middleweight champ Israel Adesanya already looks set to get that opportunity to fight newly installed light-heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz instead, but Teixeira still feels he deserves to get the opportunity before him.
“Dana White, come on man, I’m an old man over here,” Teixeira said after his latest win. “You’re going to give the shot to Adesanya and make me wait? Five fights in a row, beating these young guys. It’s not easy. Give me that title shot.”
Interestingly, Dana White opted not to shoot down Teixeira’s claim, and instead admitted that he had a point.
“He’s not wrong,” White said during the UFC Vegas 13 post-fight show. “It’s like ‘I deserve this shot,’ he’s been here forever, he’s on a streak. He looked great tonight.
“What’s funny is every time I count this guy out and think that I don’t know if he’s got it, he proves me wrong. He looked incredible tonight.”
Teixeira has fought for the title once before, some six years ago after another five fight winning streak, resulting in a unanimous decision loss to the champion at the time, Jon Jones.
In total Teixeira has amassed a 15-5 record in the UFC, with some of his other big name wins coming against the likes of Anthony Smith, Rashad Evans, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Ryan Bader and Ovince Saint Preux.
