UFC Light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones recently confirmed that he’s targeted Dominick Reyes as the fighter he’d like to face next and it seems like the match-up could take place sooner than anyone had anticipated.
“Just a few weeks away from my next fight, can’t wait for you guys to find out when,” Jones wrote on Twitter.
“OK, the person I’ll be fighting has something in common with Ryan Bader and Daniel Cormier.
“Yeah I was thinking about holding out and playing money games but I said screw it. I’m only young once, I got plenty of money. I’m out after these contenders hearts, I’m out here dream collecting.”
In case you’re wondering, Jones’ reference to Ryan Bader and Daniel Cormier is that both were undefeated like Reyes until they fought him.
Reyes has so far compiled a 12-0 record that’s included big wins over the likes of Jared Cannonier, Ovince Saint Preux, Volkan Oezdemir and most recently a KO victory against Chris Weidman.
As for Jones, he’s already defeated Anthony Smith and Thiago Silva in 2019, extending his unbeaten run to 10 years (and even then the only loss of his 27-fight career was due to an illegal strike DQ is highly disputed).
It’ll be interesting to see exactly when the fight will take place, with the most likely option being UFC 246 in January.
