Kamaru Usman defeated Colby Covington for a second time earlier this month by unanimous decision at Madison Square Garden in New York City, and it turns out that he did so under less than optimal circumstances.
According to the dominant welterweight champ, he came into the fight with a broken hand that had left him unable to punch for several weeks prior to one of the biggest fights of the year.
“I broke it before the fight. Most people didn’t know that,” Usman told the Full Send podcast. “I broke it three weeks before and I didn’t throw it until the day of the fight, I didn’t throw it until I was backstage when you are warming up before the fight. I didn’t throw my hands for three weeks, my right hand.”
Usman also revealed that another fighter on the card that night was actually responsible for his broken hand.
“I broke it on someone’s head, Justin Gaethje’s head,” Usman revealed.
Despite the injury, Usman still got the better of Covington over five rounds, while earlier in the evening his training partner Gaethje also triumphed by unanimous decision against Michael Chandler in one of the best fights of the year.
