The headline fight for UFC On ESPN 4 on July 20th in San Antonio, Texas has finally been unveiled with former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos set to fight Leon Edwards in a high-profile welterweight clash.
There had been talk that Valentina Shevchenko vs. Liz Carmouche could take the headline spot on the card, but that hasn’t materialized and so the promotion have moved in a different direction.
Dos Anjos comes into the fight having got back to winning ways in impressive fashion with a fourth round submission victory over Kevin Lee last month.
Prior to that RDA had lost back-to-back fights against two other leading lights at 170lbs in Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman, but having also racked up wins over the likes of Tarec Saffiedine, Neil Magny and Robbie Lawer since moving up to 170lbs, there’s no doubt that he remains a force to be reckoned with.
As for Edwards, he has compiled an impressive seven fight winning streak in the division that’s included increasingly noteworthy opponents, with his last two fights being victories over Donald Cerrone and Gunnar Nelson.
Despite that, Edwards is still only ranked No.11 in the division, so a victory over the No.3 ranked RDA would surely lead to a significant boost up the welterweight ladder.
Dos Anjos vs. Edwards joins a UFC On ESPN 4 card that also features a series of heavyweight clashes, including Andrei Arlovski vs. Ben Rothwell, Greg Hardy vs. Juan Adams and Aleksei Oleinik vs. Walt Harris.
