Renato Moicano appears to be taking his TKO loss against Tom Nolan graciously, despite many believing that a controversial refereeing intervention led to the fight shifting in his opponents favor.
“I want to thank the fans! I had a terrible performance; I was well-trained, I managed to get takedowns and take his back, but I couldn’t do any damage—he was defending well!” Moicano wrote on social media after his 3rd round TKO loss. “Congratulations to him; life goes on!”
Moicano had been in control of the fight for the first round and a half by getting Nolan to the mat and smoothly taking the back with his body triangle locked in. However, though ‘Money’ has a long track record of finishing fights via rear-naked choke from that position, there was a lack of activity on his part as he patiently waited for opportunities to work for the submission.
Even so, given how dominant the position is, many fans, fighters and event the UFC commentary team were left stunned when referee Dan Miragliotta opted to stand the fighters back up.
However, Nolan gratefully accepted the opportunity to get his striking game going and after dropping Moicano with a big knee to the head later in the round he would eventually go on to finish him in the following round with more strikes and then a barrage of ground-and-pound blows.
While Moicano is taking the high-road regarding the referee situation, other UFC fighters like Aljamain Sterling, Caio Borralho, Belal Muhammad, Gilbert Burns, Sodiq Yusuff, Terrance McKinney all put Miragliotta on blast for what they belief was a major refereeing blunder.
That won’t change the outcome however, which led to Moicano’s third loss in his last four fights, while stacked up his sixth win in a row.
