An already impressive looking UFC 175 event in Las Vegas on July 5th just got a major boost with a woman’s bantamweight title fight between Ronda Rousey and Alexis Davis now set for the co-main event.
There has been a lot of speculation about a fight between Rousey and Gina Carano lately, but this new fight being announced doesn’t necessarily suggest that is now off the table as even if Carano agreed to the bout she’d still need at least a six month training camp before she’d be ready to compete after a five year absence from fighting.
Clearly Rousey is hungry to continue competing in the mean time and looks to defend her UFC title for a fourth time after already seeing off challenges from Liz Carmouche, Miesha Tate and Sara McMann in the Octagon.
Davis gets her shot at the belt after going on a five fight winning streak in the past couple of year, initially in Invicta FC, and more recently with wins over Rosi Sexton, Liz Carmouche and Jessica Eye in the UFC.
With a 16-5 career record she is currently ranked as the No.2 contender in the division behind Cat Zingano and will be hoping that her black belt Brazilian Jiu Jitsu prowess can help her nullify the threat of Rousey’s infamous armbar submissions.
UFC 175 takes place during International Fight Week in Las Vegas and they are compiling quite the card for the occasion with a middleweight title fight between Chris Weidman and Lyoto Machida scheduled to headline the show.
Also announced for the main card is the eagerly anticipated showdown between TUF Brazil 3 coaches Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva.
Even with a previously targeted fight between Daniel Cormier and Dan Henderson now rumored to be headed for UFC 173 instead, UFC 175 still looks like being one of the biggest events of the year.
Fight fans will be treated to yet more big time MMA action the following night in the same arena with the TUF 19 Finale which features a fight between the season coaches BJ Penn and Frankie Edgar.
